A Basic Guide for Examination of Conscience This list, inspired by the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, helps penitents prepare for a general confession by reviewing sins in thought, word, deed, and omission. It supports priests and religious in mastering English vocabulary for the Sacrament of Confession. Sins in Thought Pride: Arrogance or self-importance above God or others. Envy: Resentment at another’s success or blessings. Anger: Unjust hatred or desire for revenge. Lust: Impure thoughts contrary to chastity. Greed: Excessive desire for wealth or possessions. Sloth: Spiritual laziness or neglect of prayer. Judgmental Thoughts: Rashly judging others’ intentions. Sins in Word Lying: Speaking falsehoods to deceive. Gossip: Spreading rumors or harming reputations. Blasphemy: Irreverence toward God or sacred things. Slander: False or malicious words against others. Cursing: Using profane language. Boasting: Seeking admiration through self-exaltation. Sins in Deed Disobedience: Defying God, Church, or lawful authority. Stealing: Unjustly taking or withholding others’ property. Violence: Harming others or oneself physically. Lustful Actions: Acts against chastity (e.g., adultery). Neglect of Duties: Failing responsibilities to God or others. Gluttony: Overindulgence in food or drink. Injustice: Cheating or exploiting others. Sins of Omission Neglecting Prayer: Failing to pray or worship regularly. Ignoring Charity: Not aiding those in need when able. Avoiding Sacraments: Neglecting Confession or Communion. Not Correcting Others: Failing to charitably admonish sinners.
